Classical swine fever (CSF), or hog cholera, is a highly contagious multisystem viral disease characterized by fever, blood vessel and hematopoietic organ damage, and croup-diphtheria-induced inflammation of the colon mucosa. CSF can occur in acute, subacute, chronic and latent forms. The mortality is 80-100%. Classical swine fever is registered in all countries and causes enormous economic damage.

The infectious agent is Classical Swine Fever Virus (CSFV), an RNA-containing virus of the Pestivirus genus of the Flaviviridae family. The virus affects domestic and wild pigs regardless of breed and age. The pathogen source is sick pigs that shed the virus with urine, feces and secretions.
